Joy for me is found in memories; those small seemingly inconsequential moments with people you love that you keep coming back to. I wanted to create a piece that celebrates those small pockets of joy or nostalgia that get us through the day. Your co-worker is sneaking you your favourite snack. Dancing in the kitchen with your flatmate whilst you cook and gossip about your day. A random compliment from a Black woman. Frantically live messaging your group chat besties whilst you virtually watch an awful movie with terrible wigs. These moments, primarily with Black women, are the moments I come back to; time and time again that give me joy and strength when I need it.
Whilst my main medium is digital illustration; for this piece, I chose to experiment with digital, collage, textile manipulation and embroidery to create a layered, colourful and textured piece as complex as our memories.
